Is Bluesky About To Take Flight?

Hazel Roche Is Bluesky About To Take Flight

As Twitter users seeks alternative platforms is Bluesky about to take flight?

With Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter (now X) in 2022, a wave of users sought refuge on alternative platforms. Among them, Bluesky has emerged as a serious contender, boasting a familiar Twitter-like interface and a decentralised structure.

A Decentralised Future

Conceptualised by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky utilises an open-source protocol (AT Protocol) that allows for transparency and independent development. Unlike X’s centralised model, Bluesky empowers users to choose their experience. The network can host several individually operated communities, each with its own moderation policies. This fosters a customisable experience, allowing users to find communities that align with their interests.

Growth and Features

Since its public launch in February 2024, Bluesky has attracted over nine million users.  Signing up allows you to create a handle (@username.bsky.social), post 256-character messages with images, and interact with content through replies, retweets, and likes. Similar to Twitter, Bluesky offers a “Discover” feed showcasing trending topics and personalised recommendations.

Catching Up with X

While functionally similar to X, Bluesky offers some key distinctions. Recently implemented features include direct messages (currently limited to one-on-one conversations), email verification for enhanced security, and a “custom feeds” feature for a more personalised experience. However, features like group DMs and a “Community Notes” equivalent are still under development.

Monetisation and Security

Bluesky strives to avoid advertising-based revenue, opting instead for paid services like custom domain names. Security is a priority, with recent updates including email verification and the option to opt-out of public web exposure for posts.

Addressing User Concerns

Bluesky has faced challenges regarding moderation, particularly concerning marginalised communities. The platform is actively addressing these concerns. Updates include “more advanced automated tooling” to flag content and user lists for enhanced moderation control. Additionally, March 2024 saw the launch of “Ozone,” a tool that empowers users to create their own independent moderation services.

The Future of Bluesky

While competitor Mastodon offers a similar decentralised structure, Bluesky boasts a more user-friendly interface. As Bluesky implements federation (joining various servers within the network), it will further resemble Mastodon, allowing users to seamlessly move between communities. With its commitment to decentralisation, customisation, and user empowerment, Bluesky is positioning itself as a strong contender in the ever-evolving landscape of social media.
