Is there a lesson in the art of personal branding from the NBA? The recent Netflix documentary, Starting 5, offers a captivating glimpse into the lives of five of the NBA’s most prominent players. Beyond the thrilling on-court action, the series provides invaluable insights into the art of personal branding.
While the documentary primarily focuses on the off-court lives of Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum, their journeys offer valuable lessons for anyone seeking to build a strong personal brand. From consistency and authenticity to storytelling and leveraging unique selling points, these basketball legends demonstrate the strategies that have propelled them to stardom.
Basketball is more than just a sport; it’s a cultural phenomenon that has influenced countless individuals worldwide. Beyond the game itself, the players have become iconic figures, building powerful personal brands that transcend the court.
So, what personal branding lessons can we learn from US basketball?
Consistency is Key – Michael Jordan
Known for his unwavering dedication to his craft, Jordan’s consistent performance on the court and his commitment to his brand have solidified his status as a global icon. Jordan built a successful marketing strategy around his brand. Jordan understood the worth of his own likeness, voice, and name, and negotiated in his own favour. Long before he won his first championship, he was the face of well-known products like Wheaties. He even negotiated with Nike, the sneaker goliath, to create his own Jordan brand under the Nike umbrella. Jordan’s own celebrity grew as a result of his powerful leverage of endorsement deals.
Authenticity Matters – LeBron James
In Starting 5 we see how James has used his platform to advocate for social justice and equality, aligning his personal beliefs with his brand. His authenticity has made him a respected figure both on and off the court.
What fans adore about LeBron is that he’s more than just basketball. He’s a star off the court too, voicing out on politics and social justice. Like most impactful brands, he’s fearless in speaking against injustice, using his influence for real change.
His work includes philanthropic efforts like the I Promise School, underscoring his commitment to empowering the next generation. He’s a role model, redefining what it means to be an athlete.
That’s why big names like Nike and Samsung have partnered with LeBron, drawn not just to his sports prowess but to his ethos of excellence and benevolent character. It’s a personality they seek to amplify their own brand power. And LeBron doesn’t just partner with brands; he’s co-founded UNKNWN, a retail destination, and launched his own tequila brand, Lobos 1707 Añejo.
Storytelling is Powerful – Shaquille O’Neal
O’Neal’s larger-than-life personality and entertaining stories have made him a beloved figure in popular culture. His ability to connect with audiences through storytelling has helped him build a successful brand.
Known for his dominance on the basketball court, he has seamlessly transitioned his success into the world of business and investments. Leveraging his strategic vision and keen business acumen, O’Neal has made substantial strides as a prominent investor, notably with early bets on companies like Ring, Uber, and Vitaminwater, solidifying his position as a force to be reckoned with in the venture capital landscape.
There can only be one winner in Starting 5 – Jason Tatum. Since being drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2017, Tatum has rapidly become one of the NBA’s top forwards. As of 2024, he has earned multiple All-Star selections and led the Celtics to significant success, including winning the NBA Championship in 2024, which can be seen in the final episode of Staring 5.
And what do we learn from Jason? Work ethic always wins. A great lesson in life.
